In Austria, all people are obliged to register. After relocating to a new accommodation you must de-register from your former address and register your current address within three days. This applies to all persons living at this address. This means, that not only you, but also your family members and children must be registered.

You must also register family members who relocate at a later point of time and newborn children.

In Austria, different authorities are competent for registrations. This depends on where you live. Competent authorities differ in cities with separate bylaw, in cities without a separate bylaw or in a towns or villages.

In Vienna you need to go to a municipal district office. However, you do not need to go to the district office of the district in which you live in, but you can submit your registration in any district office in Vienna.

In other federal states, the municipal authorities and city or town hall are competent authorities.

The registration of your address is free of costs and you will receive a certificate of registration. This certificate used to be called “Meldezettel” (and sometimes it is still referred to by this name), however, nowadays it is called “Meldebestätigung” (certificate of registration).

For the registration of your address you need the following documents:

  • Registration form
  • Passport (mandatory for foreigners)
  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate of academic degrees
