Recognition of vocational education

The recognition of vocational education is only necessary for professions, which cannot be pursued without a particular proof of qualification. These kinds of profession are called regulated professions. This means that for all other professions a recognition of vocational education is not necessary.

You can check, for example, the website www.berufsanerkennung.at to see which professions are categorised as regulated professions in Austria. External link to: http://www.berufsanerkennung.at

Recognition of school reports and degrees of apprenticeship/training

In case of school reports and degrees of apprenticeship/trainings it is important that the grades and learning contents are equivalent and comparable to Austrian standards. A supplementary examination might be necessary in case of discrepancies.

There exist inter-governmental agreements for higher school certificates and apprenticeship/training degree certificates. Therefore, higher school certificates often only need an administrative validation from the admitting Austrian institution of higher education.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Women is authorised for recognitions in the school sector. Higher school certificates can be recognised and validated at each particular institution of higher education. The Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics is authorised to recognise apprenticeship/training certificates.

Institutions of higher education

It is only necessary to apply for recognition of a foreign degree (nostrification) if your job requires it. However, this only applies to few fields of study.

Each particular institute of higher education is authorised to recognise foreign degrees. You need to apply for recognition at the institution of higher education, which offers your field of study.

There also exist inter-governmental agreements for universities relating to the equivalence of final degrees. You can find more information about the recognition of foreign final degrees on the website of the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics.
