Languages of ethnic minority communities

In Austria, some languages of ethnic minority communities are historically registered. That is the reason why it is possible that these languages (like for example Croatian, Slovenian or Hungarian) can be used in schools or in front of authorities in some regions, as far as legally provided.

German for everybody

In Austria, all people should be equally able to learn and to speak German. Children with insufficient German skills have many difficulties to make use of Austria’s educational opportunities. Your own German language skills are also necessary in cases of emergency or illness. Your efficiency in German can also be helpful to support your children’s education, for example by helping them with their homework or for talking with their teachers.

People with even further language skills are an asset for Austria. People speaking several languages can also have benefits in their professional careers. In many professions additional language skills are an advantage, especially when a company deals with foreign customers or operates in foreign countries.
