Living together

Being considerate

Politeness, mutual consideration and respect make daily life together easier. Most people in Austria will try to find a compromising solution in case of a dispute. If you observe the customary ways of behaviour closely, you will soon find out the values that are most important for people in Austria and you will get in closer contact with the Austrian society.

Help in everyday life

In Austria, mutual help, like neighbourly help (f. ex. in case of minor technical support) is widely spread. If somebody is verbally or physically abused civil courage is in order. In case of an accident people are even legally obliged to help.

Making a difference with voluntary work

In Austria, many people work voluntarily, i.e. they work unpaid in an organisation or association in order to help others in their spare time. Everybody is invited to become involved. There are many possibilities: f. ex. emergency rescue services, fire brigade, care for socially deprived people, disaster relief, environmental protection, associations for sport or other hobbies. Voluntary work helps you to get to know more people and to become part of a community.

Accommodation

Observing rules

There are rules for a peaceful coexistence if more people live together in a house or an apartment building. It is important to observe these rules in order to prevent conflicts and disputes. The rules of coexistence are written down in the “Hausordnung” (house rules) and can be found on a notice board in the house. If the house does not have a notice board or you cannot find the “Hausordnung” (house rules) you can ask your janitor (who is responsible for cleaning and mending in most apartment buildings) or a neighbour.

Recreational time

Associations in Austria

In Austria recreational time activities play an important role. There exist associations, in which people with various interests can meet and get to know each other.

Getting to know each other

Integration into the Austrian society is easier through an association in which you can meet people with similar interests. It is also possible to choose an enjoyable recreational time activity. There are also many possibilities for the whole family, like sports, chess, sewing, children’s playgroups, scout groups, ballet for children, music lessons, musical societies or theatre groups.

Nature and Culture in Austria

In Austria’s beautiful countryside a variety of activities are possible throughout the year. In winter you can have fun with skiing, cross-country skiing or sledging and in summer you can go swimming, hiking or cycling. Austria is world-famous for its art and culture: music, theatre, painting, architecture, literature, museums and operas are famous all over the world. By exploring its natural resources, art treasures and culture you can get to know the country very well.
