Neutrality

Austria has declared its neutrality for all times. This means that Austria does not join military alliances and does not participate in any war. However, Austria will defend itself military in case of an attack. The Austrian Armed Forces participates in international peacekeeping operations, performs humanitarian aid and assists in natural catastrophes or accidents.

Compulsory military service

Every male citizen is obligated to do military service or, alternatively, community service. (“Zivildienst”). Female citizens can voluntarily serve the Austrian Armed Forces.

Clear Consequences

If a person, who is not an Austrian citizen, commits a crime, disregards regulatory requirements, works illegally or marries an Austrian citizen in order to obtain a residence permit, he or she will receive a ban on staying and, additionally, a legal or regulatory sentence.

Police security

Austria is one of the most secure countries worldwide. Almost 30.000 policemen and policewomen provide for Austria’s inner security. They fight against criminality and terrorism – thanks to international collaboration they also work transnational. People living in Austria have great confidence in the police and feel secure in their everyday life.
