In Austria, the life expectancy of people continuously increases and there are more elderly persons in Austria than a few decades ago. Nowadays, elderly people are much more active and have a more independent lifestyle than elderly people of earlier generations. This is the reason why a wide variety of job opportunities and recreational activities exist for them.

Elderly people are also important members of society. Generally, all senior citizens should have the opportunity to actively participate in Austria’s social, political, economical and cultural life. Ensuring and improving the quality of life of people in this age group is an important aim.

In Austria, there are special caring services for senior citizens, whose conduct of life is severely impaired by illness or other misfortunes.

Graduate nurses, trained social workers and other trained persons care for senior citizens up until old age.

There exist various services, like care in retirement homes or day-care centres. Senior citizens are not only provided with (health) care, but also excursions and other (recreational) activities are conducted.

It is also possible to employ the services of home health care, assisted living or the so-called 24-hour-service.

Services for senior citizens are provided by public and private organisations. Please find more information in the following collection of links.
