In Austria, social services comprise a variety of different services. In general, it can be differentiated between mobile services, outpatient services, semi-residential services and residential services.

A mobile service is, for example, Meals on Wheels, which delivers hot meals for people in need.

Outpatient service providers care, for example, for senior citizens in their home.

A residential service is, for example, a care home and a semi-residential service is, for example, a day-care centre. In care homes, care-dependant people are accommodated day and night, but day-care services only provide care during the daytime.

In Austria, each particular federal state has its own area of responsibility for social services.Competent authorities are district commissions, city- or town halls, or municipal administrations. In Vienna, you need to contact social centres (www.wien.gv.at→gesundheit→leistungen→wiener-sozialzentren) or the Fonds Soziales Wien (Fund Social Vienna).

You can also inform yourself about the wide range of social services on the website of the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection (www.bmask.gv.at→site→Soziales→Pflege_und_Betreuung→Soziale_Dienste)

If you have care-dependant relatives, please take note of the information of the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection about attendance allowances (www.bmask.gv.at→site→Soziales→Pflege_und_Betreuung→Pflegegeld).

Example: Home health care

Not only hospitals and care homes are concerned with the care of ill people, but it is also possible that these people are cared for at home. Graduate nurses, but also nursing auxiliaries, conduct these services.

In home health care it is important that the habitual living environment and the self-reliance of ill people is maintained.

Information on specific services can be found in leaflets or websites of particular institutions that provide home health care services.
