In Austria, employed people are legally entitled to holidays. The employment law regulates this recreational leave.

In Austria, working people are entitled to five weeks of holidays per year. From the 25th working year onwards the entitlement to holidays is six weeks per year.

When you start working in a company your entitlement to holidays is calculated on an aliquot basis for the first six months. The full entitlement to holidays is only valid from the seventh month onwards. However, in your second year of working in a new company you have the full entitlement to holidays from the beginning of the year. Previous employments (and also apprenticeships/trainings) with the same employer are taken into account.

In case of an illness during your holidays, those days count as sick leave and are not holidays. However, this provision only comes into effect when you are sick for more than three consecutive days.

The entitlement to holidays for a particular year expires after two subsequent full calendar years.

During your holidays you are legally entitled to your full salary.
