Working hours

Working hours can be categorised into two groups: normal working hours and overtime (i.e. working time that exceeds the normal working hours).

In Austria the normal working hours are eight hours per day or forty hours per week. However, there are also exceptions to this rule.

Working hours that exceed the normal working hours are overtime. Overtime can either be settled financially or by credit hours, which means you will have more free time.

If you work more than six hours in one day your employer must allow a break of the duration of at least 30 minutes. However, this break is unpaid and does not count as working time. There must be a break of at least 11 hours in between working days.

On weekends, the legally regulated rest period must be at least 36 hours. However, exceptions are possible.
